Early 2024 – Wing Collapse & Violent Emergency Landing

Wing collapse during unstable afternoon thermals
Due to the concealment of information about the area, as it would affect tourism profits, the real images were ordered to be removed after the incident occurred.

Two inexperienced pilots launched tandem flights at 3:30 PM, a time known for unstable thermals and western gusts. Within minutes, one wing collapsed mid-air, twisted, and entered a violent spiral.

Incident Overview

Thermal activity was strong. The wing collapsed, briefly reopened, then twisted again. The pilot shut the motor down to reduce torque, but the wing remained uncontrollable. The aircraft descended rapidly and crashed hard.

Crash Outcome

  • Passenger — severe injuries requiring long-term recovery
  • Pilot — also injured, later fled Laos

Cover-Up

The pilot had no license or work permit. After the crash, he left Laos, then returned months later flying under another operator. Video footage from the incident was deleted.

Safety Lessons Learned

  • Never fly tandem in the afternoon during strong thermals.
  • Pilot certification and experience must be verified.
  • Thermals can twist wings faster than pilots can react.
